Mandi: 3 strikes and you’re out! Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, most of us have experienced this rule in life. This rule can be found in attendance policies at school and work, and are often instilled in us from childhood as a behavior modification tool. In my house, it’s taken on the form of the good old 1, 2, 3 count before placing my children in timeout. The 3 strike rule is a pretty effective way of weeding people out, and making sure time and space aren’t wasted. It’s also an effective way of making people behave in a way that we want, and maybe even need, them to. If the Umpire of life played by this rule, I’d be in big trouble, wouldn’t you?
I live life daily with at least 3 strikes against me. I’m a Christian. I’m disabled. I’m a woman. In today’s American society, particularly in the current political climate we’re in, these attributes are all things that should be working against me. Now you may be thinking about all the progress we’ve made in this country for each of these groups, but I’m not talking about law on paper, or how things look on the outside. No, I’m talking about looking beyond the black and white of the pen and into the daily life of someone like me. I’m talking about practical experiences that I, and others like me, go through. Today I’m faced with issues like a system setup to keep me down, ableism, leadership, work, and family life through the lense of my 3 strikes. The ugly truth is that I live in a society that has me striking out before I’ve even had the chance to take a swing. An even uglier truth is that I’m not alone.
As I said, the Umpire of life, God, doesn’t play by the strike out rule, so neither do I. I regularly challenge these societal strikes against me...and I’m winning!! There's still plenty of battles to fight, and a win doesn’t always mean that things turn out my way. I’m launching this podcast to talk about critical issues facing people like me, people who are often written off as strike-outs. I’m here to share my journey to finding Beauty in the ugliness the world tries to throw my way, and to motivate you to Find Your Beautiful!
